Tatton is a great writer and the material is very accessible. It’s a great introduction and I’ve passed this book around many friends and relatives
Definitely written for a beginner to the political scene. Spiller attempts to provide an unbiased introduction to British politics, how it functions and why people follow the parties that they do. He does a reasonable job, and, more importantly, shows how important it is to try to see the other persons point of view, even if you disagree with them. Just this alone, it is worth a read - he especially emphasises the way social media can push you further and further into an echo chamber of similar political views, without any attempt to provide balanced opinion. One of the main reasons we are moving into the polarised politics we find today. What I did find difficult to swallow was his attempt to explain the difference between Socialist and Communists. To me, this drew heavily on the American perception of socialists (they want state ownership of all means of production), and not on the European perception ( the state, not private industry, should run natural monopolies), there is a big difference.
Engaging and informative read. Written in an easy to read way with a funny streak. Well worth a read. I enjoyed it.
Bought for my son, who has passed onto a friend now, and thoroughly enjoyed the book, and the insights into politics
